Well, it can be hard to blog when you’re saving. So, here’s a list of FAQ’s that nobody asked us – and long may it entertain!
WHY DID YOU START YOUR OWN TRAVEL BLOG?
We wanted to write about our travels – plain and simple! We have been travelling for a long time and had been talking about sharing our adventures and tips since the start, really. From living in beautiful Annonay as au pairs to studying at Beijing Normal University – there was a lot to talk about.
WHEN DID YOU START YOUR TRAVEL BLOG?
We began the travel blog in 2017 after a gorgeous trip to Lake Garda – we had to share our findings! See here to learn about that trip.
WHAT KIND OF TRAVELLER ARE YOU?
We are different type of travellers – I (Rachel) am a bit more ‘stressy’ (for lack of a better word!) than Daniel. I need to have a map, know where we’re going, have things planned. On the other hand, I could happily spend the day snoozing on a beach, waking only to get another cocktail. Daniel would much rather be pounding the streets, making sure that we have experienced all there is to do in that location. We can walk tens of thousands of steps in one day when visiting somewhere new.
WHAT WAS YOUR MOST RECENT TRIP?
I took Daniel on a surprise trip to Amsterdam in January for his 30th birthday. It was a great weekend full of the beautiful sights, amazing food, and stunning whisky.
HOW OFTEN DO YOU TRAVEL IN A YEAR?
It depends on the year. In 2017 we went to about 7 different countries. But, since then, we have been saving hard for various plans. We try to go to Bulgaria once a year (our home from home) – but, due to bigger plans this year, we are having to miss it – which we are sad about.
HOW DO YOU PAY YOUR TRAVELS?
We work! We work hard and we save harder. Seriously – saving is how we travel. You won’t find us buying that brand new pair of shoes because we couldn’t resist, or getting our hair cut every six weeks. No siree! You can see our saving tips here.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE DESTINATION AND WHY?
Well – it’s very difficult to say. Bulgaria, as mentioned, is one our favourite places. It is so beautiful, the mountain views are just perfect and we love being there. Also, the food is outstanding – they really know about great vegetarian cooking. But, Asia holds a lot of wonderful countries in it and we love to visit there. And then there’s France, which is just perfect to us, and nothing pleases us like a trip to see our French friends.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE TRAVEL MEMORY?
Having a meal on the beach in Koh Samui, Thailand, was unbelievable. Actually, a lot about that trip was ideal. Having coffee each morning overlooking the sea was one of my favourite things.
DO YOU HAVE A COUNTRY OR CITY THAT WAS DISSAPOINTING AFTERWARDS?
Yes. Namely – Milan, Italy. We love Italy, but we did not enjoy Milan. Potentially it was just the wrong time for us to visit, we had spent the previous night sleeping on a rock beach in Ventimiglia as we couldn’t get a place to stay, and so had been up a while. Milan was an accidental stop off, and we had heavy bags and sore feet, and got horribly lost. We got a taxi that ended up taking us back to where we started because the driver got lost too – and we had to pay 20 euros for the privilege. It was very hot, and there seemed to be mosquitos everywhere. To be honest, we found it difficult to see the beauty in Milan. We decided to head to Florence quickly – there, beauty was difficult not to see.
HOW DO YOU PREPARE FOR A TRIP?
We usually use sites such as Tripadvisor and other travel blogs to help us prepare for a trip. We find it useful to know what great food is about, and often they are more up to date than travel books.
WHICH COUNTRY STANDS HIGH ON YOUR BUCKET LIST?
Easy – New Zealand. We can’t wait to visit!
WHAT WILL YOUR NEXT DESTIANTION BE?
In April (next month) we go to Turkey. Daniel will be scuba diving and I will be exploring markets. We get married in June, so this will be our last trip away together before we are husband and wife. Exciting!
