A Snapshot of Kuala Lumpur

Kl 2

This is an exciting snapshot for us to write, because it is all about one of our favourite cities in the world, Kuala Lumpur. Within this city you have it all, the best food, the best drinks, and some sweet jazz for your ears. Truly, Kuala Lumpur is home to some amazing experiences. Read on to join in!
When to Visit:
Malaysia is hot and humid all year round, so it won’t change what you are planning too much, unless there is a tropical rain storm. When the rain comes, the drops are as thick as your head – there is no chance that you won’t get wet. But it can still be fun (we got caught in the rain a few times), and you’ll dry off in no time.
How to Get Around:
The trains are quick, highly organised and very easy to use. That’s what we would recommend. Avoid them at rush hour, because they get extremely busy and in that heat, it’s not pleasant. As well as trains, it is totally possible to walk around KL without issue. As we both do a lot of walking, we enjoyed exploring the streets and bringing the maps to life.
Don’t Miss:
No Black Tie. Whether you love Jazz or not, this is one hell of a place. We have seen some amazing bands and singers there, and make an effort to go every time we visit KL. It’s easy to miss, so make sure you know where you’re going ahead of time. Once inside, sit back and enjoy some excellent food, cocktails, wine and the best jazz this side of the KL tower.
Where to Eat:
Look no further than the incredible Jalan Alor for a cornucopia of delicious street food. Whatever you are in the mood for, they will have it, and you can just eat your way down the street. It’s possibly our favourite street in the world! Jalan Alor is also surrounded by some great places (one to be mentioned in a moment), and is well worth exploring.

Where to Drink Booze:
Look no further than The Whiskey Bar. Right up the road from Jalan Alor, even if you are not a whiskey fan, you can get some fabulous cocktails and excellent service. It’s worth bearing in mind that it isn’t cheap to drink in Malaysia, because the country is Muslim and therefore a lot of the locals do not drink, or sell, alcohol. In The Whiskey Bar you can take taste journeys around the world, and try rare and wonderful whiskeys.
Where to Drink Coffee:
KL has some excellent speciality coffee shops, and they really know what they are doing. You can get a fantastic cup of coffee in this city, and you are not short of options. We love Lucy in the Sky café. They do a great coffee, lovely food, and they are right next to our favourite market…
Market Day:
Every day is market day in KL! Head to Petaling Street Market and sharpen up those bargaining tools (see here for tips on getting a better deal). You can buy all sorts and it’s also great to explore.

Have a Spare Day?
There’s plenty that you could fill your time with. We loved the Bird Park so much, and right next door is an Orchid Park which is equally beautiful. You can also take a trip to Berjaya Times Square to visit the in mall theme park (complete with roller coaster). There are many museums and galleries to experience, so when you aren’t listening to jazz and drinking speciality coffee, wander up to the National Museum to take in some Malaysian history.
